Hard Worker, Loyal, Outgoing

"Hard work beats talent, when talent fails to work hard"

- Kevin Durant

In addition to participating in the 49ers STEM Leadership Institute for the last six years, Ian has participated in Karate for 9 years, earning himself a 3rd degree black belt. He has found that Karate has taught him many lessons, including hard-work ethic, discipline, respect, commitment to goals, and striving for improvement in all things that he does. As much as he would like it, commitment to constant improvement does not mean never-ending success; rather it means to accept failures and use them as motivators.
And this approach has become integral to his personal outlook. In school, 49ers SLI, karate, and basketball, he has not always had the success he has desired, but during difficult times, through hard work and perseverance, he has turned many challenges into success. Another tennent of Karate that Ian has integrated into this life is the concept of giving back; he has volunteered both with Karate and basketball with the specific intention of helping others. When he has free time, you'll find Ian hanging out with friends and helping other people.

Tech Challenge

The Tech Museum invites teams of students to use the engineering design process to solve a real-world problem.

The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (49ers SLI) provides multi-year, year-round academic support, STEM enrichment, skills training, and leadership opportunities to students in middle and high school. Students, who are with the program for six years from 7th through 12th grade, commit annually to 300+ hours of program learning time in addition to their typical school hours. By cultivating student mastery in STEM subjects and in key skill areas, the program prepares students for college and empowers them to pursue their passions; so that they may become the well-rounded leaders of the future. The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute is made possible by the strong partnership between Silicon Valley Education Foundation, 49ers Foundation, Chevron, and the Santa Clara Unified School District.
