Independent, Whimsical, Insightful

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”

― Kurt Vonnegut, Mother Night

During her years in the 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (SLI), Iris has participated in numerous projects related to robotics and design thinking. She thoroughly enjoys combining her passion for graphic design with the logistics of design engineering, whether working with physical products, robots, or school projects. She has applied her interests to designing and building robots for FIRST Tech Challenge, in which she competed for three consecutive years.

Through SLI, she has gained practical knowledge of numerous machines such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and vinyl cutter. Iris has also refined her skills with CAD and design programs used with these machines, such as Inkscape, OnShape, and CoralDraw. She has garnered a reputation as a reliable and skilled designer within the program and is often put in charge of designing items such as stickers and team merch. She's grown very experiences with the necessary design program, including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and Premier. The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (49ers SLI) provides multi-year, year-round academic support, STEM enrichment, skills training, and leadership opportunities to students in middle and high school. Students, who are with the program for six years from 7th through 12th grade, commit annually to 300+ hours of program learning time in addition to their typical school hours. By cultivating student mastery in STEM subjects and in key skill areas, the program prepares students for college and empowers them to pursue their passions; so that they may become the well-rounded leaders of the future. The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute is made possible by the strong partnership between Silicon Valley Education Foundation, 49ers Foundation, Chevron, and the Santa Clara Unified School District.
