Passionate, Understanding, Adaptable

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."

- Theodore Roosevelt

Kalie C. is a student at Santa Clara High School and a part of the founding cohort of the 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (SLI). Throughout elementary school and early middle school, she immersed herself in summer robotics camps and took on small coding projects, allowing her curiosity and creativity to pave her way. When she joined SLI in the 7th grade, she stepped further into the field of technology, with much of her time within the program spent competing in robotics and engineering competitions such as Tech Challenge, FIRST Lego League, and FIRST Tech Challenge.
Her passion for computer science has led her to pursue the subject in her own time through a university-led robotics program and a summer of research at a computational media lab. In this past year, Kalie co-created an Android application and business plan to compete in the Technovation Challenge and applied her self-taught skills and experience in app development on an industry level during a summer internship at Cisco. In her (albeit limited) free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, advocating for the environment, and capturing the beauty of nature through art.

The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (49ers SLI) provides multi-year, year-round academic support, STEM enrichment, skills training, and leadership opportunities to students in middle and high school. Students, who are with the program for six years from 7th through 12th grade, commit annually to 300+ hours of program learning time in addition to their typical school hours. By cultivating student mastery in STEM subjects and in key skill areas, the program prepares students for college and empowers them to pursue their passions; so that they may become the well-rounded leaders of the future. The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute is made possible by the strong partnership between Silicon Valley Education Foundation, 49ers Foundation, Chevron, and the Santa Clara Unified School District.
