KAYLAN M.

Caring, Passionate, Determined

"I believe that culture shapes identity and defines possibility; that it teaches us who we are, what to believe, and how to dream."

-  America Ferrera

BIOGRAPHY

Kaylan joined the 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (SLI) halfway through the program during her sophomore year in 2017. Although she was exposed to a new environment, she adapted quickly and learned to adjust to a more advanced academic workload and school involvement. She has always been passionate about STEM fields because she enjoys understanding and using science and math.

Spurred by her desire for learning, Kaylan want to ensure that her peers to have the best opportunities in life and strongly believes that everyone should have the tools to pursue a bright future. To best help others, she has become a tutor for the younger SLI students; and she has found that it gives both her and the students the opportunity to develop relationships and build valuable skills. In the future, she hopes to continue to directly help others grow and succeed.

In addition to her philanthropic and academic pursuits, Kaylan enjoys relieving stress by watching teenage romance comedy movies and reading about them. In a way, these films — with their rosy outlooks and happy endings — have cultivated her passion to help others succeed by showing the importance of helping and caring for others.

AWARDS & PROJECTS

The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (49ers SLI) provides multi-year, year-round academic support, STEM enrichment, skills training, and leadership opportunities to students in middle and high school. Students, who are with the program for six years from 7th through 12th grade, commit annually to 300+ hours of program learning time in addition to their typical school hours. By cultivating student mastery in STEM subjects and in key skill areas, the program prepares students for college and empowers them to pursue their passions; so that they may become the well-rounded leaders of the future. The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute is made possible by the strong partnership between Silicon Valley Education Foundation, 49ers Foundation, Chevron, and the Santa Clara Unified School District.
