Hardworking, Empathetic, Humble

you haven't tried anything."

Nelly B., a senior in the 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (SLI), intends to pursue a major in Computer Science or Sociology. Her passions center around social justice and helping people to feel represented. While she hasn’t always been a “STEM” person, through SLI she eventually found an interest in deciphering puzzles and finding solutions.

This interest led her to participate in a Girls Who Code event, which not only showed her how computer science can be very useful, but also introduced her to the issues that result from the gender gap and lack of diversity in the field of computer science. Having discovered her enjoyment of computer science and the social implications that would arise from her joining the field, Nelly choose to pursue computer science.

When she isn't pursuing her STEM and social justice interests, she spends time weightlifting, increasing her awareness of mental health issues, and taking care of those she loves and herself. She deeply appreciates the value of education and the sacrifices her parents have made to help her gain her education. She loves being around her family and friends and she always makes sure to make time for them in her day.

ExploraVision is a research report competition for K-12 students engages the next generation in real world problem solving with a strong emphasis on STEM.

Girls Who Code Intuit

Santa Clara High, 2019

A beginner coding program at Intuit with a focus on Python, HTML, CSS, Javascript and Arduino. The program aims to help girls understand the gender gap in technology and technology related fields and gain a better understanding in computer science.

The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (49ers SLI) provides multi-year, year-round academic support, STEM enrichment, skills training, and leadership opportunities to students in middle and high school. Students, who are with the program for six years from 7th through 12th grade, commit annually to 300+ hours of program learning time in addition to their typical school hours. By cultivating student mastery in STEM subjects and in key skill areas, the program prepares students for college and empowers them to pursue their passions; so that they may become the well-rounded leaders of the future. The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute is made possible by the strong partnership between Silicon Valley Education Foundation, 49ers Foundation, Chevron, and the Santa Clara Unified School District.
